Revisiting a Popular Post

by Texas Homesteader ~

I’ve gotten so many questions about making homemade yogurt.  Folks are really surprised to find out how easy it is!  For those of you who missed it, I’m reposting this easy step-by-step tutorial of my homemade yogurt recipe.  It’s easy to make, takes very little hands-on time, and since I make it in reusable 1/2-pint caning jars it’s not only single-serving convenience but environmentally friendly too!  Enjoy.

Sharing My Life With My Loves

by Texas Homesteader ~

Spring is a beautiful time to live in Texas. After the dreary season of winter, Texas puts out all her beauty for spring. The skies over our ranch are amazingly blue, the grass turns a vibrant green and bright yellows and dainty whites start popping out in bloom.

Aaaahhhhh….

Since our kids all live in suburban environments it's lots of fun for them to come to the homestead and play in the country for a bit. #TexasHomesteader

No More Being Chicken – We Bought Chicks!

by Texas Homesteader ~

When we purchased our property in 2000 I fell in love with the old 1880’s barn. When we had the exterior repaired we had the workers leave the coop intact & just repair the exterior walls around it, but alas it sat empty all these years.

We’ve always known we wanted to try to raise chickens some day but it was never a priority. Well today we quit playing “Chicken” and jumped in with both feet.

The Garden That Love Planted

by Texas Homesteader ~

Those who know me say that having a vegetable garden is just in my blood. And I’m likely to agree with them.

I guess it’s just something deep inside me that feels the strong drive to nurture the earth and through grit and gentle determination coax from it nourishment for both my body and my soul.

But things came up this year and with a sigh I conceded that a vegetable garden was just not meant to be for the first time in…  well maybe EVER

Although I had begun garden preparations months ago, “Life” stepped in and there was simply no way I could tackle the now-overgrown beds and plant. I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Due to surgeries & healing I had to face my limitations this year – it was just too much.  Maybe next year…

Then Love happened.

The Garden That LOVE Planted! I couldn't plant a veggie garden due to health. Then several people showed their love by showing up to help. #TexasHomesteader

Recipe: Jalapeno – Cheese Beer Buns for BBQ

by Texas Homesteader ~

I recently wrote about making some pretty darn tasty shredded pork BBQ from my talented RancherMan’s successful ‘bringing home the bacon’, as it were…

The BBQ was delicious but I decided this time I’d like to bake my own homemade buns as well.

I make jalapeno-cheese beer bread often and thought jalapeno-cheese flavored beer buns might be a fun twist for this meal.

The verdict is in: They were awesome!

I often make jalapeno cheese beer bread, so why not jalapeno cheese beer buns to go with homemade pulled pork BBQ? These are delicious! #TexasHomesteader

Out Of Pocket – Missing Our Bottle Babies

by Texas Homesteader

We usually enjoy raising bottle calves each year in the spring.  This year we had things come up right at the time time we typically buy our babies so our bottle baby pen remains empty this year.

I’m looking forward to raising these little cuties next year though! We’re out of pocket today, so enjoy this photo from last year’s babies showing some Cuteness! Everyone together now – Awwwwww….

Each spring we purchase 3-4 bottle calves to raise - Lots of work but we love it! #TexasHomesteader

Each spring we raise 2-4 bottle babies, usually dairy breed males. Although they are a tremendous amount of work, expense and worry with very little (if any) financial gain, we typically really enjoy the efforts. On Monday we purchased this spring’s babies. Here’s a sneak peak at the cuteness.
