Roses on Valentine’s Day
Regardless of how you choose to spend Valentine’s Day, there are some things that require your attention. February the 14th marks the day when people plant their seed potatoes in Texas. It also marks the day to prune your roses.
Some people are afraid to prune their rose bushes. They are not sure exactly what to do. My husband is not afraid. He just goes to cutting, and the bushes always seem to bring forth more beautiful blooms when he prunes. I have included an instructional video on pruning your rose bushes. I hope you learn from it.
On a slightly different note, I love to read poetry. I have my children copy poems in their best handwriting as part of their school; therefore, we look for seasonal poems throughout the year. As I perused Valentine’s Day themed poems, I found two that I thought appropriate for homesteaders or anyone living out in the country. They made me smile.
Curly Locks
Curly Locks! Curly Locks! wilt thou be mine?
Thou shalt not wash dishes, nor yet feed the swine,
But sit on a cushion and sew a fine seam,
And feast upon strawberries, sugar, and cream!
~Traditional
A whole day to not have to wash a dish or feed the animals! Now that is a gift. Although, I would spend my day reading instead of sewing, but the poem was not written about me.
If you like country vernacular, then you will love this last poem for the day.
Roses Red
Rose’s red, vi’let’s blue,
Sugar is sweet –but not lak you.
De vi’lets fade, de roses fall;
But you gets sweeter, all in all.
As shore as de grass grows ’round de stump,
You is my darlin’ Sugar Lump.
W’en de sun don’t shine de day is cold,
But my love fer you do not git old.
De ocean’s deep, de sky is blue,
Sugar is sweet, an’ so is you:
De ocean waves an’ de sky gits pale,
But my love are true, an’ it never fail.
~Cabin Love Rhyme
Happy Valentine’s Day!
