“America the Beautiful” Contest

By Lara DeHaven

The Art for Homeschool website just held its fall art show with the theme of “America the Beautiful.”  The theme was very appropriate with the election and Thanksgiving right around the corner.  The usual ideas came to mind.  Visions of soaring eagles, flags waving in the wind, and other American symbols are represented in the entries.

In addition to these dear symbols, the theme also encompassed what made/makes America great.  For example, a father serving his family.  A representation of a donkey, who played a role in the expansion of our country.  They bore heavy loads as families moved westward.  I wanted to show you our entries.

As diverse as our entries are, there are also many different media.  Our family entered photographs.  One is a still-life created by the photographer and one was happened upon while walking down the street in New York City.  We entered colored pencil, crayon, and watercolor.

The entries are in, but we do not know the outcome of the show.  We don’t know who won nor have we received our constructive criticism from the judge.

At the close of this election week, we wanted to exhibit our work here today.  Good art will evoke an emotional response in the viewer.  Regardless of our talent or lack of it, our hope is that, as you look upon my family’s entries for the “America the Beautiful” contest, the art work will make you proud to live in this great nation.  My kids and I would love to know what you think.

The Donkey by Jake DeHaven. He used crayon.

America by Jake DeHaven. He set up this still-life with supervision of course.

American Eagle by Kyla DeHaven. She used colored pencil.

My Country Tis of Thee by Kyla DeHaven. She also used colored pencil. Kyla has really been working on making her drawings 3 dimensional.

A Father in Uniform by Lara DeHaven. I painted this portrait of my husband with watercolors. He volunteers as Assistant Drill Master in the Grimes County Mounted Posse. He does it because he wants to be involved with his children, who are also members.

Three American Symbols by Lara DeHaven. I could not pass up this photographic opportunity. An America flag waving at the intersection of Wall St. and Broadway. Who could have anticipated that?

Well, again, I am amazed. All of the work is beautiful. Jake, horses are so difficult to draw, and your drawings are better every time I see them. Kyla, I loved seeing the Texas flag displayed by the American flag. There is nothing like Texas pride. Lara, I knew immediately that Lane was in the portrait! Amazing how far you have come in such a short time. I love you all.
