Texas Homesteader Update

By Lara DeHaven

Isaac is pulling Andrew through the pumpkin patch.

I sometimes forget how busy the fall can be.  I ended up taking two weeks off from writing.  It was not scheduled; it just evolved into a mini-vacation from Texas Homesteader.  It seems like I have been running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

I took Kyla to the eye doctor and she now has reading glasses.  Isaac went in for formal allergy testing with the pin pricks and blood testing.  I will write about the doctor’s finding soon in its own article; however, it was one of the longest days of my life.

I am fighting a rabbit in my garden.  It has a voracious appetite.  The bunny is single-handedly setting my  garden back.  I apparently have planted all of its favorite vegetables like carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and greens.  I think that the rabbit actually thinks I planted it for him.  For the first time in my life, I read The Tale of Peter Cottontail by Beatrix Potter with sympathy for Mr. McGregor.

Our neighbor is in poor health.  My family and I are trying to help her out as much as possible.  She needs prayers badly.  I don’t want to give out her name; however, God knows who Lara’s neighbor is.  If you feel so inclined, please add her to your daily prayers.

School is going really well.  My husband said the other day that he could not believe how smoothly the year was going.  He added that the kids were learning so much.  Lane went on to say that whatever curriculum I was using really worked well.

Our family minus Clayton with an uncooperative Isaac. Regardless, I still like the photo. I will always remember Isaac being difficult at this stage in his life.

I was tickled pink.  Anytime anyone gives you unsolicited praise, it just means that much more.  However, I am not using a set curriculum this year.  I am conducting Kid School in the Thomas Jefferson Education model.  If you read about it and thought, “Oh, yeah.  Sounds great, but does it really work?”  My family can attest that it not only works, but it works well.

Our church is conducting its Matthew 25 Project for 2010.  It is a fund-raising technique based on the parable of the talents in Matthew 25.  My family and my mom have partnered to provide photographic services to our church members and others.  We are taking family portraits.

Yesterday, we were in the Pumpkin Patch at our church waiting for a client to come for their photographic session.  We made the most of our time.  Each child picked out a relatively small pumpkin to take home.  Then we took photographs.

My mom and I

The best pictures occur when the subjects of the photograph are not posing.  Look at the first picture as an example.  My mom is very talented at just watching my boys playing and catching them at a good time.  Photography is fun.

If you are just learning to take photos, take as many pictures as you can especially if you are using a digital camera.  “A blind hog is bound to find an acorn every once in a while.”  You too are bound to get a good photograph.  Once you do, learn what makes that picture great.  Then try to repeat it.  Eventually, you will become a great photographer.

It is good to be back and writing.  I hope you enjoy our family’s pictures in the pumpkin patch.
