A Portable Library

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

As with most homeschooling families, our home is filled with bookcases.  They are not display cases to show off our treasures, but literally filled with our own personal library.  We have biographies, novels, collections of poetry, collections of short stories, practical books, resource books, picture books, field guides, etc. As each gift giving occasion approaches, my husband always asks me what... »

Having a Mary Day

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Have you ever gotten so interested in something that time flew?  You look up and wonder, "Where did the day go?"  You realize that you have completely absorbed in what you are doing that you have not done all that you intended or needed to get done that day. Dirty dishes are piled up in the sink.  Clean laundry is piled... »

A Great Birthday

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Birthdays are more special to me than other holiday because I can devote the entire day to one person in my family.  Regardless of whose birthday it is, we plan the day for them.  The birthday boy/girl gets to choose the menu, what we do (within reason), and open a few presents.  We usually eat on china.  Our family does... »

Grade A Milk

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I have always striven to get the best grades possible.  Yes, I was that kind of student,  a teacher's dream.  So it makes since that even in our home dairying, my husband and I would strive to get an A on the quality of our milk. According to the USDA,... »

Raw Milk Yogurt

Monday, September 20th, 2010

I have been making yogurt for awhile now, but I just recently tried making raw milk yogurt.  All the yogurt I have made has been from our raw goat milk; however, I have heated the milk to 180 degrees and let it cool to 110 degrees before adding the yogurt culture.  If you are... »

Harp Music on the Homestead

Friday, September 17th, 2010

We are not a recording studio, and have access to simple computer tools.  I thought I would share some music that my daughter, Kyla, has composed. She has played harp for years now.  I think she is really gifted.  One of my favorite things in this world is to hear her play the harp.  The music is soothing and beautiful.  My... »

Seamless Lessons

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

This is my first year to completely write my own curriculum for my children.  Eight years ago when I began my home-schooling journey, I relied heavily on curriculum.  I used Sonlight at the time, which I really liked.  It is a literature-based curriculum and I absolutely loved their reading lists. As I grew in... »

Last Saturday, the Grimes County 4-H clubs met at the KC Hall in Anderson, Texas for an awards social.  We met the new County Council members and saw many friends. The DeHaven family was represented well by both Kyla and Jake.  They are both Junior 4-H members.  They completed record books and both advanced to the District 9 competition.  Kyla competed... »

A Sweet Holiday

Friday, September 10th, 2010

My family is celebrating the Biblical holidays for the first time this year.  We have really enjoyed learning about the holidays of the Old Testament.  Not only have we enjoyed having extra holidays to celebrate, but we have learned so much.  What I am most excited about is the growth in our understanding as we read the Bible.  I highly... »

The High Price of Free Range

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

We prefer to raise our animals in as natural a state as possible.  All of our animals are given areas in which to roam and forage for themselves.  Some of our animals are completely free-range.  They can go where they please to find the best food sources for themselves.  I believe... »

The Best Almond Flour

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Whether you eat gluten-free, avoid carbohydrates on a high protein diet, or are simply an adventurous cook, I bet that you have cooked with almond flour.  The recipes in my cookbook, Texas Homesteader Wheat-Free Cookbook, depend on almond flour.  But as I found out while experimenting for my cookbook, not all almond flours are... »

Utilizing Old Magazines

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

I promised to share some of my foreign language teaching techniques from time to time.  "Incorporating the Gouin Series in Spanish" was my first article on the subject after I wrote, "Review of Rosetta Stone Software."  If you are interested in the Gouin Series or Rosetta Stone, please check... »
