A Photographic Nature Walk

By Lara DeHaven

After school and chores were done, the kids and I went on a walk to get some exercise and enjoy the absolutely beautiful Texas day.  I grabbed my camera because you never know what you are going to see.  I wanted to capture the rebirth of spring.  Kyla grabbed her camera also.  We had the most fun on the walk.

I believe we have some of the coolest cats in the world.  They do not just lay around sleeping all day.  They are hunters.  So far this month, they have killed one snake and several birds.  I am not happy about the birds, but I am impressed with their hunting abilities.  Our cats also go with us on our walks.  Our dog is out ahead of us.  My family is in the middle of the procession.  And, our cats follow us.

The cats joined us on our nature walk.

I know that passersby must think, “Oh, here comes the woman with the five kids and three cats.”  I know that our procession is unusual.

Here are some of the flowers we saw on our walk.

The State Flower of Texas

Wild Dewberry Blossoms

The Red-Bud Tree in Bloom.

I was excited to see the amount of baby pears on my pear tree.  I was really worried about my tree when it bloomed out so early.  The light freeze we had did not seem to affect it adversely.  I love to eat pears straight from the free.  Hopefully I will get a bumper crop this year.

Baby pear, like these, cover the entire tree.

Of course, I could not resist taking a picture of our baby ducks.  We have six ducklings.  They are growing strong and big.  They are beginning to get their feathers.  Soon we will allow them out of the large cage in which they spend their days.  At night, they sleep in a large pet taxi.  I really enjoy my ducks.  They entertain me.

Our ducklings.

It was fun to go on a photographic nature walk.  Regardless of where you live, you can do this easily.  Urban dwellers will have much different subject material, but I bet it will be just as fun.  The subjects will be very interesting to capture.  I hope you enjoyed seeing scenes from around the farm.  And, I wish each and every one of you a Happy Easter!

  1. Beautiful photos!
I’ve been dreaming of ducks lately myself … though I don’t think I’ll be getting any soon.
    Blessings,

  2. Hi Lara,
Love to see the flowers that are different from different areas of the country. And you have redbud, too! I love redbud. I’ve read the buds are edible but haven’t tried them in our salads, yet.
Wish I had water, I’d have ducks, but stay tuned for pictures of my baby goats!
    Have a great weekend,
    Carol

    Catherine,
I love my ducks. I like listening to them quack and watching them waddle. It is so peaceful to see them glide across the pond water so gracefully. And, our drake needed some friends.
