Harlem in College Station,Texas

Our signed program.
My first memory of the Harlem Globetrotters was when they appeared in the animated series of “Scooby Doo.” It has been a long time since I have seen this program, but I can still hear the famous music that the Globetrotters use when doing their great ball handling. I never once thought that I would see them in person.
You can imagine my surprise when my husband announced that his mother was taking the whole extended family to see the Globetrotters. My children were excited, too, but honestly we had no idea what to expect.
So last Monday evening, we arrived at Reed Arena on the Texas A&M University campus. We saw several families that we knew as we found our seats right at the half-court line. The first thing that caught my attention was the wide variety of ages present at this event. There was a teeny, tiny newborn. There were elderly people. There were college students and teens. There were small children dressed head to toe in Globetrotter gear. There were adult couples. Obviously the Globetrotters appeal to the masses.
The Washington Generals made their appearance on the court amid a booing crowd. Frankly, this surprised me. I had never seen any team booed as soon as they appeared. Then I understood why. The Generals coach talked trash in a family-friendly way. I began to see that this would be no ordinary basketball game.
The game went by pretty quickly. The ball handling skills of the Globetrotters are amazing. I think of all the time that they must spend daily in practice. The amount of teamwork was impressive as well. I now know that the whole performance is scripted; however, the main theme was teamwork.
I played basketball throughout junior and senior high. I know all too well that some people are ball hogs. Some people display bad sportsmanship and bad attitudes. Some people will take the shot triple-teamed when two other teammates are wide open. None of this happened with the Globetrotters. It was nice to watch the way that they worked as a team.
My favorite part of the evening was watching my oldest child smile and laugh at the same things that entertained my three-year old. It really was an evening for the whole family.
After the game, Kyla and Jake took the program down to the court for autographs. The Globetrotters will sign anything for an allotted time. The game clock was set for 23 minutes. My children worked together and were able to get all eight of the players on the court and the coach’s autographs.
We are going to frame our autographed program in a poster-sized frame to remind us of the enjoyable evening we had. Hopefully, my children will remember how well the Globetrotters worked together. Like I said at the beginning, I had no idea what to expect. The Globetrotters put on a highly entertaining performance. My family thoroughly enjoyed our evening. So, thank you, Nana, for taking us to see them with you!
