Homemade Gift Ideas, Part Two
This idea is much easier to make than the concrete bench in “Homemade Gift Ideas, Part One.” It takes only some of your time and resources. It costs very little to put together.
Last year I made “Farm Fresh Baskets” for friends and family. I found some inexpensive baskets in red, green, and/or gold. I shredded some white computer paper in the shredder and filled the baskets with the paper. Then I compiled gift baskets of things made or grown here on my farm.
I made loaves of $750.00 bread. If you are thinking, “Excuse me, what?” click here. Then I made fudge. I made half pint jars of jalapeno jelly. I picked carrots and cabbages from our garden. I gathered eggs from the chicken coop. I also picked bay leaves from a tree in my mother’s yard.
Then I separated each item into the amount that I wanted to give to each person. I placed each loaf of bread in a 2 gallon plastic bag. I pushed all the air out of the bag and sealed it. Then you wrap the plastic bag tight against the loaf while taping the back like a present. Then you just tie a ribbon around its center. I put the fudge in small containers. I simply arranged the other items in the basket. I then tied ribbon around the handle. I also wrote the names of all the items in the basket on half of a index card. Looking back I wish that I had taken pictures of the baskets because they were pretty.
Everyone seemed to like the “Farm Fresh Baskets.” They appreciated the fact that I spent time making something special for them like the freshly ground whole wheat bread and jalapeno jelly. They also enjoyed fresh eggs and vegetables. And, who doesn’t like fudge? I enjoyed giving these baskets away.
Ask yourself what do you have in abundance? Is it eggs or nuts or oranges? What do you make well? Is it cookies, candies, or breads? What kind of baskets can you make? You can make theme-based baskets or just put a variety of your favorite things together. You could put popcorn, candy, and a movie together as a “Movie Night Basket.” You could make a spa basket with lotion, sugar scrub, and manicure set. The possibilities are endless.
