An Interesting Weekend

By Lara DeHaven

Thursday evening my husband called me from his shop.  He was hurt.  While he was working on a pick-up truck’s transmission, he tripped.  The transmission fell from the jack and landed onto his leg.  He hurt so bad that he almost passed out.  I got him inside and barely got his boots and jeans off before the swelling would have made it impossible.  We would have had to cut his pants off.

We elevated his leg, put ice on it, and gave him some pain medication.  He did not want to go to the doctor.  He decided to just monitor it.  I called my aunt who is a registered nurse for some advice.  The next morning it was still swollen, but to our surprise there were no bruises.  Unfortunately he could not bear any weight on his leg.  He used crutches until my mother came over.  She jokingly told him, “Use crutches and we are going to the doctor.”

He put the crutches down and decided to hobble around the place.  By that night, he asked me to take him to get a x-ray.  Fortunately, his fibula is not broken.  It is just badly bruised.  So his leg is still on ice off and on all day.  I went to the health food store and bought arnica, which is good for muscular pain.  Next to it was a homeopathic tablet for bone injuries.  I bought that too.

My husband is a ranch manager with horses and cattle.  So the kids and I did his job and took care of our own farm.  But it was not all work, on Friday according to our local feed store the planets were aligned in a certain way that a broom would stand on its own.  So of course we tried it at home.  It worked!  There is some controversy whether or not this is really due to the planets, but it was fun either way.

We also had tamales to make for our Matthew 25 Project.  We had so many orders for tamales that we had to make two batches.  Our grand total was 81 dozen tamales made and sold.  We even turned some people away.  I want to thank everyone who supported our project.  It was a lot of work, but the cause was definitely worthy.

We also took family portraits, which is always everyone’s very favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon.  We decided to take the pictures around the barn and with the horses that my children ride.  The weather was spectacular and I have beautiful pictures of my children and of my family together.  I want to thank my mother for doing such a nice job and offering her photography services.

It is safe to say that there is never a dull moment around here.  Something is always happening.  It certainly made for an interesting weekend.

  2. So sorry to hear about Lane. I hope he heals quickly and we will be praying for him. Call me the next time the planets are in line for a broom to stand on its own. Man, I’m sorry I missed that, seriously. That is too cool.
