The Matthew 25 Project

Pork tamales ready to eat.

Pork tamales ready to eat.

Based on the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, our church is in the middle of doing a fun and meaningful project called “The Matthew 25 Project.”  The church gives each of its members a relatively small amount of money.  My husband and I together received $40.00.  We are then challenged to use the money and through our creativity make more money to return to the church.

Lane and I have been trying to figure out what to do.  We have brainstormed ad nauseum.  Not too long ago, we made wild boar tamales.  I wrote about it in “Hot Tamales.”   It cost us about $40.00 to make 56 1/2 dozen tamales.  We gave some away to family and friends.  They have raved about how good they are and have requested to purchase some.  Selling them at the going rate we would be able to make some money and not only return the $40.00, but also all the profit.

In the fear that we would be the man who was too scared to try to even put the money in the bank, we have decided to make another batch of tamales and sell them.  We will be asking $6.00 a dozen or $10.00 for two dozen.  They will be pork tamales, but not wild boar as we have not trapped one.  We will make half mild and the other half spicy.

If you live anywhere near me, please let me know if you would like to order some tamales for my Matthew 25 project.  My family will be making them sometime this week.  I can deliver to the College Station area next Tuesday, October 20th and the Conroe area this Sunday, October 18th.  If you live closer to me than those cities, contact me and I will either meet you somewhere close or give you directions to my farm.

Regardless of where you live, I hope that the Matthew 25 Project will inspire you to be creative and raise money for a good purpose.  Members of our church do a wide variety of things.  One woman is getting sponsorships for a bike ride.  Another family is hosting movie nights at the church for a certain price.  Some families are raffling off items.  One man is making handmade wooden pens and hummingbird feeders.  Off the top of my head, these are some of the projects going on.

Participants get excited about their individual projects.  The excitement is contagious.  We all get to learn once more how good it is to give.  Doing this project you have an opportunity to give of your time, work, creativity, etc.

So if anyone wants to support the DeHaven’s Matthew 25 project, please let me know so that we can unload approximately 50 dozen tamales.  We would love your support.

Laura, please set aside two dozen for Gary and I for this Sunday – mild please! And if your family makes more around the Christmas holidays, that’s one of our favorites for our family gathering on Christmas Eve.

Thanks so much and we’ll see you Sunday!

We will take 2 dozen. How spicy is the spicy? If not, burn your mouth hot then we will take one dozen of each. If the spicy it really hot then all mild. =) Call me and I will try and meet you halfway if that helps.

    Marty,
Thank you for the order. I just thought I would let you know that the tamales freeze very well. You just steam them until they are heated through and they taste like you just made them. Lara

    Lara and Lane,

We’ll take 4 dozen tamales, half and half, unless super hot, then 3 mild and 1 hot.

    See you at church, Sunday
