A Pot of Gold
The most odd thing happened yesterday. My family and I were driving home from the feed store loaded down with sacks of feed for the chickens, goats, cats, dogs, etc. We had also purchased seeds for our fall garden. The sky looked really dark, but there was a rainbow present in the sky. We assumed that it had rained where we were headed. As we got closer to the rainbow, big drops of rain began falling from the sky and sliding down our windshield. I commented to my husband that I thought the scene was bizarre because rainbows usually follow rain.
As we continued on the road, I actually saw the end of the rainbow. It hit the ground! I had never witnessed this before. My husband joked that there must be a pot of gold down there. Before we knew it, the rainbow was no longer there in the ditch. It had moved to the road and ended on the front of our car. Everyone gasped at the very peculiar sight. Even as we drove, the rainbow continued to remain on our hood. I looked back at the kids and said with a smile, “See, I always told you we were rich.”
They smiled back in a knowing way. Ever since they were old enough to talk, one would occasionally ask me if we were rich. If you saw how we lived or looked at our bank statement, then this question would be obvious. It would be laughable to think we were rich. However to my kids it was not so clear.
When presented this question, I always respond the same. All I say is “We are rich in love.” This answer seems to satisfy the young ones. The older ones do not even have to ask. Like I said, the answer is obvious. Money does not bring happiness, but our family is happy. We love one another deeply. Our home is filled with laughter and love.
So yesterday, we saw something to allow us to remember that our family is rich, but not by the world’s standards. We saw that our family is the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Instead of running around trying to find gold, we just had to look at ourselves and how precious we are. It was a great moment.
So, for all the scientists who want to explain the event as a prism bending through the falling water droplets, yada, yada, yada, please don’t. Let us just enjoy the moment. Things like this do not happen everyday. I hope that each and every one of you can look at your family today and see the gold, too.
