The Cleaning Power of Vinegar

By Lara DeHaven

I am still amazed at the cleaning power of vinegar and water.  Since one of my sons is allergic to chemicals in cleaning products and another son received a third degree burn from a household cleaner, I have been even more diligent than ever at using all-natural cleaning products.

My clean bedroom!

My clean bedroom!

We are in the process of repairing our home.  We laid tile this past weekend.  If anyone has ever tiled, you will know the haze left behind from the grouting process on your tiles.  You can purchase haze cleaners at your local department store or you can use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water.  It removes the haze easily.  I then went back over the floor with just plain water.  The floor is absolutely beautiful.

The wooden blinds were covered in years of grime.  It was quite embarrassing how dirty they were once I started cleaning them.  To clean them, I simply sprayed them down with white vinegar and used a damp rag to wipe the blinds down.  It was so easy!  No scrubbing required.

I really opened Pandora’s Box when I started cleaning because then I had to keep cleaning other things.  I scrubbed the baseboards and trim with the same solution as the blinds.  I just sprayed the rag instead of the trim.  I wiped down all the walls where I could see chalk from the chalk line or hand prints of my youngest son.  I also wiped down the doors. Vinegar works nicely on windows and mirrors without leaving a streak.

Vinegar has enormous power.  It was so effective and easy.  Most importantly it is safe to use around small children.  I highly recommend using vinegar instead of harsh cleaning products.  It is cheap.  I buy gallon jugs of it to have on hand.  I fill a spray bottle with it for easier application.  I have only described how I used vinegar to clean my bedroom.  I haven’t even begun describing its uses in the rest of the house, but maybe another time.

The only drawback of using vinegar is its smell.  To me it is no big deal.  If you cannot stand the smell of vinegar, you can drop some drops of your favorite essential oil to cut the smell.  It might smell strong at first, but it evaporates quickly and does not seem to linger long.  Otherwise, try it and be amazed at the cleaning power of vinegar.

I too believe in using only vinegar and baking soda as a household cleaners and so much cheaper than all those other cleaners.I can not believe what people will pay for cleaners and to open their overly stocked cabinets….I’m just in shock and too think all they need is VINEGAR!
