Thank you, Lady Bird

The State Flower of Texas

It’s the time of year that I just want to thank Lady Bird Johnson. She is responsible for the Highway Beautification Act of 1965. She had a love for nature and wildflowers. Ms. Johnson also founded the National Wildflower Research Center. Because of her legislation, wildflower seeds were sown alongside state highways.

As a result, commuters enjoy a kaleidoscope of color on their drive. A sea of wildflowers moving in the wind like waves. Bluebonnets are the main flower along the roadways. They are the Texas state flower. My son, Jake, took the picture above of a bluebonnet in case you are not familiar with them. The red-orange color of the Indian paintbrush contrasts nicely with the royal blue flowers. Occasionally pale pink primroses dot the landscape. I call them buttercups.

The beauty of the roadsides beckons all families with cameras to pull over for photographs. Well-intentioned people trample the flowers as they try to surround themselves in their beauty. If you are in the area, slow down not only to enjoy the flowers before they are gone, but mainly to make sure you do not hit a parked car.

It is truly a sight to behold! These wildflowers are one of the many reasons I love springtime in Texas.
